PLANNING WORKSHOP FOR DEVELOPMENT OF A MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR FANGA’UTA LAGOON
On Thursday 22nd September 2016, Ridge to Reef Integrated Environmental Management of the Fanga’uta Lagoon Catchment Project conducted a full day workshop planning for developing a Management Plan for Fanga’uta Lagoon Catchment. The workshop was opened with a prayer by the Town Officer of Nukunukumotu, Mr.Samuela Fangupo Latu. Acting CEO for MEIDECC, Mr. ‘Ofa Fa’anunu was the guest of honour in the ceremony and in his Opening Remarks he stated:
“We are living in a time where evolving change to our lives and environment is shaped by the choices we act upon, it is only right then that such forum as today is available to provide glimmering lights of a framework to a management plan owned by the people and its government to ensure security of livelihoods, eradication of poverty and resilience to climate change impacts.”
Among those presences in the ceremony were CEOs, Directors and Officers from government stakeholders, District and Town Officers of Fanga’uta Lagoon Catchment, as well as community members from the 26 communities surrounding Fanga’uta Lagoon Catchment.
Purpose of the Workshop is to develop an integrated Management Plan for Fanga’uta Lagoon Catchment and to provide a framework and structure to support the communities of Fanga’uta, government and any donor agencies, addressing priority issues in making sure the area develops as a prosperous, healthy and safe place to live for current and future generations.
The workshop includes group work where 4 different groups comprised of representatives from the 26 communities and 1 group representing the government, private sectors and NGO. The inputs and recommendations presented from members from the various group works are significant contributions to the formulation of the integrated Management Plan for Fanga’uta Lagoon Catchment that the Policy International Consultant will be producing for the project.
The workshop ended with a Closing Remark from the Acting Director of Environment, Mr. SiosiuaLatu expressing his gratitude to everyone who has been involved in the collaborative process and implementation of the Ridge to Reef programme in Tonga, “your valued input and participation since the inception of the project up to its implementation process is highly appreciated.”This closed the workshop with aprayer and gratitude speech from the participants conducted by District Officer of Lapaha District, Mr. KelekolioNivaletiMelekiola.
